What people say

I came across Onyinye’s services through her website and sent her an email. I had lost my father and needed to travel to Nigeria for his funeral rites. This would involve a lot of interactions in Igbo, including reading the Igbo bible during the service. I needed to ‘brush up’ on my Igbo before travelling. Indeed, Onyinye knows her onions. We had brief sessions where we practiced relevant topics to help with conversation. We also practiced reading the Igbo Bible. I was able to take the first reading in Igbo during the funeral service. Everyone was amazed and impressed, and I was given an Igbo Bible by the Reverend! God bless you, Onyinye.
Onyinye,
Canada
I attended Onyinye’s class at the Umu Igbo Unite Beginner classes and sought her out for one on one sessions. She has a deep knowledge of the Igbo language. She is not only great at correcting me when I say something incorrectly, but also at explaining why it is incorrect. Her explanations help me understand the reasoning behind the language, which makes it easier for me to avoid making the same mistakes in future. As a result, I am more confident speaking Igbo, whether with friends or family.

Growing up, my grandma spoke Igbo constantly, and my parents also spoke to us, but I really didn’t know Igbo. After scouring the internet for resources to figure out the basics, I found IgboHub because I wanted to improve my conversational Igbo. Onyinye has been great at breaking things down for a first generation Igbo man like me without being patronizing or discouraging. Her warm personality and relaxed nature build a perfect environment to speak the Igbo you have so that you can try, sometimes fail, but learn constructively from your mistakes and slowly become a proficient speaker.

I grew up in the USA and shared the same narrative that Nigerian-Americans have: Could understand Igbo when spoken to, but could not respond. This was extremely frustrating for me. I came across Onyinye’s page on Instagram. After looking through her website and some sample pages from her book The Complete Guide to Igbo Language, I saw her dedication to spreading knowledge of the language. I enrolled in the Complete Igbo course on Udemy and also had one on one sessions with Onyinye. Onyinye is a VERY thorough teacher. Her bright and fun personality made me look forward to classes, and I was able to overcome the fear of judgement, which had been one of my major barriers to learning. I went in with the goal of just speaking Igbo better, but now I am also better at reading and writing!

My kids had a wonderful experience being taught Igbo by Onyinye at the Ottawa Catholic School Board International Languages Program. She is a passionate and dedicated teacher who makes every lesson interactive and engaging. She provides the environment that enables children to speak and practice confidently. I noticed great improvement in the kids after as little as 1 month after they started their classes. I am grateful for the positive impact she has added to my children’s Igbo learning journey.

I grew up in London and was only exposed to Igbo on a basic level. Similar to many Igbo people outside of Igboland it was never taught to me growing up. I signed up for the Complete Igbo course because I love my culture and I am passionate about becoming fluent in the near future. The sad reality is that your family, although they might be fluent in the language, sometimes do not have the passion that will help you achieve your goals. To become fluent in any language you need to find a teacher who is just as passionate about learning the language as you are. My experience has been amazing and Onyinye is always at hand to help if I have any questions. Onyinye "I meela".
Chidi

Onyinye is the Igbo language teacher for my two kids. They were born in the US, however, it is very important to me that they speak Igbo to be able to communicate with their grandparents and our family in Nigeria. Onyinye has a way with kids. It is a feat to keep the kids engaged for the duration of the class. The kids can see that she is listening to them and taking them seriously and that motivates them to participate. My kids are speaking Igbo more confidently because of how Onyinye challenges them to reach beyond what they know, encourages them to reach the mark, and celebrates them when they perform well.
Chinwe

I grew up with Igbo being spoken all around me but I couldn’t understand much until I was about 15 years old. That was when I made the decision to listen more actively and start doing more independent learning. I didn’t have any formal classes before signing up for the Complete Igbo course with one on one sessions. I continued with Survival Igbo and Conversation classes. I have learnt so much. My fluency has improved massively and I am even able to have conversations with my great uncle which is a huge step for me.
Akachi
London UK
I grew up in an Igbo household in the US where Igbo music was always playing. My Mum taught us how to dance traditional igbo dance, and we even attended a monthly Igbo mass. However, for whatever reason, my parents only spoke English to us. I self taught myself Igbo by immersing myself as much as I could into the culture. I read I signed up for Conversation classes because I struggle a bit with speaking Igbo. The Conversation classes are awesome! It made me realize that there are a lot of Igbo words unlike what I often hear people say! Igbo is spoken figuratively so describing something may require different words from English. I would 100% recommend Conversation classes.
Chinenye

My father is Nigerian and my Mum is from Switzerland. Although I grew up in Switzerland, it was always important to my Dad that we got to know the Igbo culture. He spoke English to us as it was also a foreign language in Switzerland, and my Mum did not speak Igbo. I had tried to learn Igbo for a long time and tried different ways until I came across the instagram page @nwaadaigbo. The Complete Igbo Course is by far the best way to understand the structure of the Igbo language and work towards becoming fluent. It's been a great experience. Although I am not fluent yet, I understand much more than before and can carry on a simple conversation.
Ndiya
Switzerland
I am a Canadian language enthusiast and my husband is Igbo so I really wanted to learn the language. I tried for a while to find online resources to help me but with no luck. I stumbled on Onyinye through the Igbo Podcast and signed up for the Complete Igbo Course. Onyinye’s lessons are detailed and easy to follow. What’s more, she adds fun and humor to her lessons, and is very patient with slowing down her speech as my ears get accustomed to the sounds of the language. I would highly recommend any of her courses.
