HOW TO GET BY EVEN IF YOUR IGBO IS ‘MID’

Sounding confident in a language that you are still learning is not about perfection. It is about calmness, clarity and presence. Here are some helpful tips:

1. Generously make use of the simple words you know already. Greet with ‘Ndeewo’ (Hi, Welcome, Goodmorning), ‘Kachifo’ (Good night), ‘Daalu’ (Thank you), ‘Ọ dị mma’ (Fine).

2. Respond to questions with words like ‘Eee’ (Yes), ‘Mba’ (No), ‘A ma m’ (I know), ‘Ọ dị mma’ (Ok). ‘ Ị sị gịnị? (What did you say?) You likely know these words already, and won’t run into problems using them since they are short.

3. Use your verbs to make short simple sentences, even if in EngliIgbo e.g. ‘Mepee fridge’ (Open the fridge), ‘Yiri sweater’ (wear a sweater), ‘Nye Onyinye $10,000’ (Give Onyinye $10,000). EngliIgbo is perfectly acceptable in informal Igbo so don’t feel that you have to know it all.

4. Finally, use your Nouns/pronouns + di + adjective in English to describe e.g. ‘Uncle Ifeanyi dị generous’, ‘Ọ dị ridiculous’, ‘Anyị dị very grateful’. Again, EngliIgbo.

Remember, a sentence does not have to be long and/or complex to make sense. Focus on communication, not perfection.
