Can I be taught Igbo in my dialect?

Dialects can be defined as the different ways a language is spoken, usually varying by physical location. Igbo language reportedly has over 30 dialects. This means versions of Igbo spoken in various communities across Igboland. The differences between dialects can be seen in words or in the sound of the words. Igbo dialects vary in complexity, some being easy to understand while others may seem to sound like a different language entirely.

Igbo Izugbe, also called Standard Igbo or Central Igbo is the standardized form of Igbo language recognized in Igboland. It is the Igbo with which literature is written and information is communicated formally. Most native speakers are able to understand and speak their dialects as well as Igbo Izugbe.

As a learner, I recommend that you learn Igbo Izugbe first. This is because it is standardized and helps you grasp the language without too many seeming contradictions. Moreso, most resources that will aid your learning is produced in Igbo Izugbe. You will also have the advantage of communicating with Igbo people from any part of Igboland.

Furthermore, Igbo language has been described as ‘deep, dynamic, etc. In speaking, we employ the use of idioms, proverbs, slangs, and even ‘Engliigbo’, in addition to our different dialects. This can be a lot to handle for a learner. The best approach would be to get a basic understanding of the language, then explore its other expressions such as your dialect.

Having said this, I understand that some learners would want to learn only their dialects. Finding a tutor in your dialect may be difficult but not impossible. Reach out to family members or people from your community. If you belong to online groups with people from your locality, it is a good place to begin your search. There is a rising number of conyent creators on social media who speak different Igbo dialects. The comment section of these creators will most likely have people who speak these dialects and may be willing to teach.

Whatever you do, never stop learning.
